Originally submitted by amb63 to Burton - Snyder Family Tree on 6 Mar 2008 "SPIRES AND HARDER - According to family tradition, two men (Spyres, Spires, Spiers), left Germany for England in the 18th century in order to avoid prosecution for a law they broke when they taught poor children to read and write.Among their descendants was the father of Richard spires and John Spires. Richard Spires was born in 1754 in Englad or Prince George's County, MD. The Spires of this article are descendants of his brother, John Spires, born seven years later in Prince George County, MD. Both men served in the American Revolutionary War.John Spires (1761-1821) married Mary Hinton (1765-1855) on August 24, 1784, near Bladensburg, MD. Ten years later they moved to Indiana County, PA. Finally leaving Pennsylvania and settling first in Gallia County, OH, then in Meigs County, OH. John Spires was granted a pension in 1818 at the age of 57. His wife, Mary, was granted a widow's pension in 1849 at the age of 83. We have the names of eight children.The fifth child, William R. Spires (1824-1910) married three times (1) Cynthia Russell has a daughter Phoebe (2) Letitta Eblin, no children, (3) Eliza Jane Skinner (1836-1914). 12 children, four boys and six girls, grew to adulthood; Eliza and William are buried in Nye Cemetery, Chauncey, OH.Their seventh child was Joseph Martin Spires (1867-1953). He married Netta Harrison (1870-1944) and they are buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Jackson County. Joseph was a religious man and he erected his own church, "Uncle Joe's Chapel" on State Route 124 near the Jackson-Vinton county line. He was a coal miner and owned a good farm. Joseph and Nettie raised four sons Roma (Romey), Clyde (dad), William (Bill) and John. All have many descendants in Jackson County and elsewhere.Clyde Cecil Spires (1890-1952), a coal miner, married Sada (Sadie) Helen Hartley (1892-1925), has six children: Adrian, Mildred, Clifton, Ralph, Susan and Roy.Clifton James Spires, Sr. was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1915. On May 1, 1936, he married Minnie Harder. Clifton retired from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 189 in Columbus in mid-1977. He was superannuated from priesthood responsibilities of teacher by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) with headquarters in Independence, MO on Jan. 13, 1991. To the union came two children.Julia Marie Spires, (1942-) married Gerald William Schardt and they have twin sons. Samuel William Schardt and James Aaron Schardt, born Dec. 19, 1972. Following a divorce, Julia married William Leroy Massie on April 1, 1989. They live in Worthington, OH. She is a professional librarian.Clifton James Spires, Jr. (1951-) married Joy Elizabeth Martmann on Oct. 31, 1981. A son, Jonathan Keith Spires, was born July 20, 1982. "Clif" is managing editor of the The Wellston Sentry, is an established playwright, musician and patron of the arts at the University of Rio Grande and participates in other orgranizations in southeast Ohio. At the present time he is serving as pastor of the RLDS McArthur Mission."
