John H. Hawkins was called Jack by family . He was the son of Walter and Anna Hawkins. He came to California to "get rich" mining gold. On October 7, 1936, he was working at the 356 foot level of the Souleby Belle Mine near Soulebyville, California, drilling in the roof of a tunnel with a stoker and had been placed on the floor of the tunnel. He drilled into an old charge and was killed instantly with a skull fracture. He is buried in the city cemetary in Columbia California.
