Mary was born is Bedford County, Virginia. Her parents were farmers there. She was a petite woman with dark hair,wore parted in the middle and pulled tightly back in a bun. She wore glasses in later life. She was a devoted Christian who had converted in the Methodist Epis. Church in early childhood . She was named Mary Jane Hurt but her nick-name was Molly. Her mother, Sarah Grigsby Hurt was born in Virginia and her father, Joel Hurt was from England according to information on Mary's death certificate. Besides raising her own children (9 were born to her) she also was responsible for the care of her grandchildren after her son, Walter shot himself, and his wife was committed to an institution. She died of chronic arteriosclerosis at the age of 78, shortly before her 79th birthday. She is buried at the Rose Hill Cemetary.
