It is assumed Fountain was born in Bedford after parents 1804 arrival. There has not been any concrete proof of his birth in any records. There are a few indications in old court records and papers. It is certain that George W. Hawkins is Fountain's brother. Both are mentioned as sons in the will of William Hawkins, Craig County, Virginia, made in 1848. George was the Sec.y for Fountain and Celine's marriage bond. Fountain was a witness for George in the purchase of property in 1833. Fountain and George made land purchases at the same time in 1833, and were neighbors. Both purchases were made form Edward and Katherine Estes. Katherine (Catherine "Catey") is the sister of George and Fountain, mentioned in the will of Jane Bayne, April 1802, and in the will of William Hawkins, her father. In other records, the name Fountain is recorded in a court order to William Hawkins: March Court 1827-" The court doth appoint William Hawkins guardian to his infant children Viz. Gilley, Fountaine, Spotswood, Harvey and Martha Ann Hawkins who gave bond in the penalty of Two Thousand dollars conditioned according to Law." These same children are mentioned in the bible insert belonging to the Love family. Fountain and Celine named some of their children the same as the brothers and sisters in the court order. There was a Spotswood, a Harvey and a Martha. John Henry named his first son William. William is Fountain and Georges father's name, husband to Jinny (Jane) Bayne Hawkins. In the birth and death records of Bedford Co.: 3/8/1871- George W Hawkins, age 71 yrs. 6 mo.; son of William and Jane Hawkins; husband of Nancy A. Hawkins; born at Culpeper Court House, Va. Fountain may have been born in Bedford County, as William first bought land from his father in law, George Bayne, in 1804. Catherine was probably born in Culpeper County as she is mentioned in the will of her grandmother, 1802.
Fountain died before September 18 of 1865. There is an inventory and appraisement of the estate. Due to the prolonged time factor in courts of the day, the death of Fountain may have been a couple of months earlier. It lists many of the items they owned on their farm. His wife died after 1852, but before the 1860 census. There is a Hawkins death listed as unnamed female 1855. At the sale of items on the estate, Thomas Hawkins is recorded as making a purchase at the sale. Thomas was George's son.
It is possible that the reason for the 1827 court appointment of William as the guardian of his infant children is due to the probate/ inheritance the children were willed by their grandfather, George Bayne, who died in about April of 1825.
