WILLIAM WESLEY KEELING, physician and surgeon of Nemaha City, Nemaha co., NE; b. 10-10-1831, Noble Twp., Shelby co., IN; d. 3-18-1918; m. (1) 1-22-1852, MARIETTA MITCHEL (b. 5-19-1837, Shelby co., IN; d. 3-27-1855; married when she was only 15 years old), and (2) 6-23-1858, Omaha, Douglas co., NE, MARIAN (MARY) ROBERTSON SPIER (b. 7-25-1837, Switzerland co., IN, to ROBERT SPIERS [b. 1803, Scotland], who m. 12-10-1821, MARIAN ROBERTSON [b. 1802, Scotland and d. 1839]). He received the rudiments of an education in the log school houses of his day in IN. He graduated from the Eclectic Medical Institute at Cincinnati, OH, 1864, in medicine. He came to Nebraska in July, 1857, and located at Nemaha City, where he acquired a practice. He practiced in Nemaha county from 1857 to 1863, and in Indiana
from 1863 to 1891, when he again returned to Nemaha co., where he resumed his practice. He has always been a democrat, but has voted some with prohibitionists, and was a member of the Nebraska territorial legislature in 1858 and 1859. He has also served as mayor of Nemaha City. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of the Knights of Pythias, and a master Mason. Several times he went on hunting trips to the West with groups of men, particularly to Colorado and Nebraska. It was on one of these trips that he
met his second wife. In his later years he also owned a drug store. He always wore a beard and smoked a cigar. When he was 86 years old he decided to move back to Indiana to spend his old age. He sold all of his possessions in Nebraska and had all arrangements made to move when he had a heart attack and died. His widow d. in Waldron, IN, in 1925. Both are bur. Nemaha, NE.
