Thomas was left as a child, (by his father, David, who was a sea captain) with a family. David provided means of support for three years, while he went back to sea. He surely could not raise the child at sea. Thomas' mother had died, either at childbirth or shortly thereafter in Havana, Cuba harbor. When David was lost at sea, Thomas became an orphan in Charlestown, where he remained until he was a young man.
