He grew up in Glasgow Scotland all his life. He worked as steel moulder in a foundry for most of his working life. He also served in the Highland Light Infantry Corps for the British Army in WW I. He was a very typical outspoken Orangeman and hated the Catholic faith with a passion.

He was commonly known throughout the family as " THE BIG A"
