Hardin and Christina Woodring Hartley spent their life on a farn five miles west of Pattonsburg. Hardin and his brother in law were brick masons, and were working in Richmond, Missouri when the war broke out. Hardin was a veteran of the civil war. He was a corporal in the first Missouri Caverly, Army of The Confederacy. He was captured early in the war and spent the remainder of the war in a prison camp. His family never heard from him untill he returned after the was was over.
