Col. William Allen White, born about 1800, son of Capt. Jacob White and Hannah Spiers White was first married to Caroline Poindexter on November 3, 1828. Second marriage to Lucy McDaniel Reese.
Col. William White was a prosperous planter of Bedford County, owning vast tracts of land and many slaves. He was a kind and lenient master, giving them alwaus a half holiday on Saturdays, for their own pleasure and amusement. The plantation, he inherited from his father, was a village in itself. On it was located the manor house, slave quarters, store, mill, shop, etc. He was a man of fine mind,pleasing personality, well educated, public spirited, honorable, and highly esteemed. He was a Christian gentleman of the highest type, a friend to the poor, affectionate father, and a man of great influence in thes county, holding positions of trust and responsibility. In 1832, he was commissioned Captain of the 91st Virginia Militia, and in 1835 he was commissioned Col. of the same company. An old roll book once belonging to him, is now the prized possession of Dr. Benjamin F. Sledd, Proffessor of English at Wake Forest College, a great-grand nephew of Col. William White, and the son of William E. Sledd, for whom on the death of his father, James Sledd, Col. White was made guardian in 1840.
Col. William Allen White married Lucy McDaniel on May 10, 1841. She was very young, scarcely more than a girl. She was noted for her marvelous beauty and gracious personalit.
Col. White died in 1844- just in the prime of his life. He was laid to rest in the family burying ground at "Charlemont Lodge" by the side of his parents.
