FORREST EVERETT KEELING, b. 6-8-1897, Geneva, Shelby co., IN; m. 10-2-1923, Lafayette, IN, ELSIE LEOTA CASTER (b. 1-21-1900, Jay co., IN, to JAMES R. CASTER and MARIA ....; d. 10-21-1973, while they were on a Caribbean cruise when Elsie had a heart attack; bur. Green Park Cemetery, Portland,
Jay co., IN). He attended Indiana University and in 6-1923 graduated with A.B. and M.D. degrees. He took an internship at Indianapolis City Hospital, Indianapolis, Marion co., IN. In order to make ends meet (while he was drawing $6.25 every 2 weeks) she was employed as a public health nurse in Indianapolis, IN. On. 9-1-1924 they moved to Portland, IN, where Forrest engaged in the practice of medicine until he retired 2-28-1973. He had a general
practice of medicine, until 1945 when he limited his practice to pediatrics. His medical education and practice were interrupted several times by service in the army. He was in WWI from 4-7-1917 until 12-26-1918, starting as a and being discharged as a 2nd Lt. He was in the Indiana National Guard as a medical officer from 1924 until 1-29-1940, when he was called to active duty (WWII) as a regimental surgeon with the rank of major. He remained on
active duty until 12-7-1945. He spent three years in the Southwest Pacific as commanding officer of station hospitals and attained the rank of colonel. At the end of the war he remained in the active reserve. In January 1951 he was recalled to active duty and placed in command of a newly activated evacuation hospital in Ban Kreuznach, Germany. He remained there for 2 1/2 years, being joined by Elsie for 1 1/2 years. They took advantage of leave time to travel
rather extensively in Europe. He then returned to Portland to resume his practice. While Forrest was in the Southwest Pacific, Elsie took a refresher course, and then was the nurse in charge of the Government Nursery in Gulfport, Harrison co., MS.
