Respected Pioneer Citizen Passes in Stephenson

The late Mrs. Daniel Bray, formerly Miss Matilda Madill, was born in the Township of Clarke, in the County of Durham, Ontario in the year 1845. She was a daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. John Madill, Sr. Here, in the vicinity of the town of Port Hope, her early girlhood was spent. Following the marriage of her eldest sister, the late Mrs. Wm. Underwood, of Tara, Bruce County, Mrs. Bray went to live with her sister there, and remained with her until grown to womanhood. In the meantime, her parents, with other members of the family, had moved to Muskoka and settled on a farm near the historic Madill's Church. The late John Madill, Sr. (father of Mrs. Bray, Mrs. E. Armstrong and the late John H. Madill) donated the property on which the church was later built.
After her marriage to the late Daniel Bray, whose family had recently moved to Muskoka from the town of Cobourg, Ontario, she and her husband moved to their new home, "Oak Grove", Stephenson Township. They had four children, Fannie A., Wells, Allum and Frederic. The two oldest have lived with their parents at the old "Oak Grove" farm, Martin's Siding; Allum at North Huntsville and Fred at Utterson.
Mrs. Bray was taken ill on July 31st, and passed away on Monday, August 27th. She was attended by Dr. J.P. Davies, of Huntsville, and very tenderly cared for by members of her family, but all efforts to save her life proved unavailing. Kindly friends and neighbours sent beautiful flowers, fruit and other delicacies for the patient, but as the days wore on she was unable to take any nourishment and became gradually weaker. Her intellect remained bright until the very last moments of her life.
The funeral on Wednesday afternoon, August 29th, and was largely attended. The service was in charge of Rev. Alfred Laycock. The musical part of the service was rendered by Miss Agnes Madill. A niece of the deceased. Rev. Laycock preached from the text "These all died in faith", taken from Hrbrews, 11th chapter and 13th verse, and spoke feelingly of the personal qualities of the deceased, whom he fittingly descibed as a "Mother in Israel". The remembrance of Mr. Laycock's tribute to their beloved mother will be cherished by members of the family and the grandchildren, while memory shall last.
The pall bearers were John and Archie Madill (nephews of Mrs. Bray), Alex McKay, Ernest Turner, Gerald Green and Frank Smith, all warm personal friends of the late Mrs. Bray and her family.
The late Mrs. Bray is survived by her one daughter, three sons, one sister, Mrs. Edward Armstrong, and six grandchildren. Her husband predeceased her on December 28th, 1931. On May 22nd last, Mrs. Bray celebrated her 89th birthday anniversary, the day being happily spent with members of the family, her grandchildren and only sister.
