John Spiers, Jr and Elizabeth Hannah Spiers
THE HUNTSVILLE FORESTER
June 26, 1930
The small band of Stisted pioneers is becoming smaller. Mr. John Spiers of the Etwell community, Township of Stisted, was taken suddenly ill on Sunday morning and passed away in the late afternoon at the age of 73 years.
Mr. Spiers, one of a family of sixteen, came to Stisted with his parents 59 years ago. Those who complain of present roads may be interested to read that Mr. Spiers, a brother and two of his sisters walked in over an ox trail from Bracebridge. The family moved here from Russell County, where the deceased was born.
Mr. Spiers married Miss Elizabeth Hannah and of the union there remains George, occupying the neighbouring farm; Wilson and Effie at home; Mrs. Walter Cook, Etwell; Mrs. Blackhall, Toronto; Mrs. Sangster, Montreal; and Mrs. F. Scott of Oxbow.
The interment took place at Madill's Cemetery and was in charge of Mr. Albert Ball. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C.C. Wellerman at the home and at the graveside. Mrs. Spiers, who has been ailing for some time, was not able to accompany the cortege. The pallbearers were Messrs. Henry and Will Hines, Wes Leith, Will Henderson, Sid Goldthorpe and Elijah Smith.
Of the many brothers and sisters of the deceased, those who were able to be present were: Thomas, of Burks Falls; Joseph, Bracebridge; George, Huntsville; and Mrs. McNabb of Thornloe. Those unable to be present were: Mrs. Wallington, Huntsville; Mrs. Sam Bradley, Brantford; Mrs. Johns, Walkerville; Mrs. Huggard, Windermere; and Mrs. Jamieson, of Ottawa. Other visitors from outside points were: Mr. and Mrs. George Quinn and Mr. James Saunders, all of McKellar, Parry Sound.
