This William Spiers was named, as was the custom in those days, after his older brother who had died in infancy. He was baptized on October 13, 1839 at Thornborough, England. He emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1844 and appears, along with his wife Flora, in the 1861 Canadian Census for Cumberland Township in Russell County, Ontario. They were living in the household of John and Elizabeth Spiers at that time. His wife Flora was born in Scotland, the daughter of Percy and Catherine Campbell. According to Ontario Land Registry records, when he purchased land from his father in 1869, William was a widower.
