Joseph was the eldest son of John Spiers and Elizabeth Colton. He was baptized at Thornborough, Buckinghamshire on April 22, 1832 and would have been about ten years old when his parents emigrated to Canada.

He never married and, from Census Records, always lived with his parents. A notation on the 1871 Census indicates that he was "of unsound mind". The exact dates for his birth and death have not been determined although he apparently died sometime between the 1881 and 1891 census dates.
