OBITUARY

Muskoka will miss one of its sons in the passing of Walter Frederick "Fred" Spiers. Mr. Spiers died suddenly November 15th at his daughter's home in Stouffville. He was born in Stisted Township 78 years ago to the late Joseph and Mary Catherine Spiers.

His early years were spent logging along the rivers of Muskoka just as his father and grandfather had done. Later he worked for the "Bell", walking, or driving horse and buggy checking lines. After his marriage in 1921, he worked as a trouble shooter for the Hydro in Gravenhurst and Haliburton areas. In later years he made his home in Toronto and was employed for may years by Air Terminal Transport Limited. Upon his retirement in 1967, his home in Bracebridge enabled him to enjoy the Muskoka he loved.

Service was held at the Reynolds Funeral Home in Bracebridge on November 18th with Rev. D.E. Sharpe of the Free Methodist Church officiating. Brothers of Orange Lodge 218 of which Mr. Spiers was a long standing member carried him to his final resting place in the Madill Cemetery, to lie with his sister and parents. His parents were among the pioneer settlers who helped to build the historic Madill church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. E.L. MacKenzie (Helen) of Toronto and Mrs. F.W. Saxby (Pearl) of Stouffville; three sisters, Mrs. Fred Allan (Martha "Janie") of Gravenhurst, Mrs. Charles Goddard (Olive) and Mrs. Oliver Marsh (Edna), both of Bracebridge, and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
