OBITUARY - Georgetown lost a well-known resident and former fire chief, when Erwin Lewis, aged 70, died at Peel Memorial Hospital on August 7, 1983. For 32 years from 1941 to 1972 Lewis was a member of Georgetown Fire Department in every capacity, concluding his lengthy service as fire chief from 1965 to 1969. In a tradition of the fire department, where sons often follow in father's footsteps, son Bruce is now district chief.
"He was a man who couldn't say no," says son Bryan, who recalls shivering at night because his dad kept the window open so he could hear the fire siren. These were the days before individual firefighters were equipped with beepers, and the siren was heard wailing all over town. Bryan says the fire department was his father's life and often times his mother would say she married the fire department.
Erwin Lewis came to Georgetown from Huntsville in 1941 as a licensed mechanic. Here he met and married his wife Peg. The couple celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary last year. Through the years he worked at Ken McMillan's Farm Machinery, Lane's Transport, Norton Bus Lines and latterly with Varian Canada Limited. Until six months ago he walked to Varian from his Normandy Boulevard home.
He is survived by his wife Peg, sons Bryan, Barry and Bruce, and daughters Lauren and Leanne, grandchildren Todd, Brent, Janelle, Duane, Alyson, Shalon, Mathew and Mark. Georgetown Fire Department, an honor guard and fire trucks lined up to honor their former chief at the funeral service, August 10, at St. George's Anglican Church.
