THE FISHING TRIP

By Leslie C. Spiers

I spent the summer of 1946 on the farm with Aunt Ida and Uncle Edgar. One day Uncle Cecil showed up to spend a few days and do some repairs to the farmhouse. I helped him rebrick the top of a chimney and replace some cedar shingles on the roof. Uncle Cecil invited me to go to his home in McKellar so I could do some fishing with my cousin Gordy. Gordy had not been home long from the hospital in Toronto where they were treating him for a bad leg wound received in Europe.
I had a fine time with Gordy in McKellar. We fished three different lakes with great success, taking time out for some target practice with Uncle Cecil's new .22 Hornet rifle. As I recall, Gordy was a crack shot, but he claimed that Cecil was a better one.
One day Gordy suggested that we ask an Uncle of his if we could borrow a boat with an outboard motor so that we could fish Lake Manitouwabing. Permission granted, we went down to the dock in McKellar where the boat and the motor were already in the water. We started the motor without trouble and spent the day on the lake. When we returned to the dock and tilted the outboard motor out of the water, we discovered that one of the three propeller blades was broken off. Gordy said, "Boy, will my Uncle be mad! We better get a new prop for the motor." Then Gordy borrowed his Dad's car and we went to Parry Sound to look for a new propeller. When we came back we replaced the broken prop and returned the boat to Gordy's uncle. The Uncle said, "I see you broke the outboard motor prop." Gordy asked, "How did you know that?" His uncle replied, "Well, the prop that was on the motor had one blade that was missing and now it's all fixed." Ha! Ha! on us.
