CLARENCE EDGAR SPIERS 1909-1961
Edgar Spiers was the ninth child of George Spiers and Annie Peters and was the only one of that family that stayed on Sunny Valley Farm from birth to death. He was never called Clarence by anyone who knew him. Edgar could not read or write and may have never attended school on a regular basis due to childhood illnesses and staying home to help with farm chores. Regardless of the lack of formal education, Edgar was skilled at all the jobs necessary for the operation of a farm and was particularly good at milking cows and splitting wood. During the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's he worked for a Mr. Birch on the farm next door. After George died my Grandmother Annie depended on Edgar to take the Whippet car to Huntsville for flour and sugar.
Edgar's favourite pastimes were fishing, hunting and just sitting around looking at pictures in magazines while smoking his pipe. He had two favorite spots on the shore of Lake Vernon where he always had good luck fishing. Edgar was terrific at spotting game and finding partridge after they were flushed. He also was the only one in his family that could find water by dowsing with a divining rod.
Unfortunately, sometime in the late 1950's he developed diabetes. A nurse would come out to the farm from town to check on him as he was living alone. One day when she came, he was found lying by the wood stove in a diabetic coma from which he never recovered.
