P0RTLAND PRESS HERALD
Saturday, June 8, 1996

OBITUARY - Edna M. Davis, 100, a former senior center volunteer who enjoyed travelling, gardening and cooking, died Friday at Freeport Nursing Home. Born in Huntsville, Ontario, she was the daughter of Samuel and Lydia (Spiers) Bradley, attended school there and was married to the Rev. Alfred G. Davis in Huntsville in December 1914. As the wife of a minister, Mrs. Davis moved to many Maine towns, including Brunswick, where her husband served as the Methodist minister. After his death in 1954, Mrs. Davis lived in Connecticut before moving to Brunswick in 1975.
For her 100th birthday celebration last summer, more than 100 friends and relatives from throughout the country and as far away as England came to Maine to help Mrs. Davis mark the milestone.
Mrs. Davis remained active well into her later years, volunteering at the senior centre in Brunswick while in her 80's. She continued to plant and tend her own flower and vegetable garden until she was 94. Upon moving into the nursing home, Mrs. Davis enjoyed sharing stories about her travels with schoolchildren who came to visit. She had been to every state, including Alaska and Hawaii.
The mother of six children , Mrs. Davis kept the dinner table filled with homemade bread which she baked in batches every week. Making homemade bread became something of a tradition in the family and has been passed on.
Mrs. Davis was a member of the Brunswick United Methodist Church, Lisbon Falls Rebekahs and was a life time member of Crescent Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, at East Boothbay. She is survived by two sons, Bradley G. Davis of Auburn, WA, and the Rev. Phillip B. Davis of Syracuse, N.Y.; two daughters, A. Beryl Chad of Conyers, GA., and Ruth Purinton of Brunswick, ME.; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. A son, Burton A. Davis, died in 1994 and another son, Paul H. Davis, died in 1973.
A funeral service was held on June 11th at Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick, with the Rev. James T. McPhee officiating. Burial will be in Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.
