CONC
MARRIED AT SIXTEEN - A WIDOW AT NINETEEN
Hannah Spiers was married at sixteen years of age to Rueben Winters. They had two children, William Henry and Albertha Lydia. Shortly after the birth of Albertha, Rueben Winters caught pneumonia and died. A family legend indicates that Hannah then nearly became a mail order bride. She entered into an engagement, by correspondence, to marry a gentleman who lived on St. Joseph Island in Lake Huron, near Sault Ste. Marie. She apparently travelled there and, on her arrival, checked into her lodgings. The proprieter is said to have provided some unflattering information about the prospective groom, who was away at work in the bush, whereupon she changed her mind about the marriage. She then met and married Duncan McArthur.
