OBITUARY OF THOMAS HUGGARD
After a long seige of illness, Thomas Huggard, a highly respected citizen of Windermere, Muskoka, passed to his reward on Friday, August 13th, in his 74th year. The late Mr. Huggard was born in New Brunswick in 1853. When 17 years of age, along with his parents, he came to Ontario, and settled in Watt Township, clearing and hewing a home in the dense bush and began farming, experiencing the life of the early settler when provisions and necessities were a luxury and had to be hauled in for miles. During the life of Mr. Huggard he took an active interest in the township. When he gave up farming he started a summer resort at Windermere. When this place became a village he was elected to the Council board, being well versed in municipal affairs.
Mr. Huggard was twice married, his first wife being Mary A. Goldsmith of Collingwood, who died at DeeBank, 4 years later. To this union were born three children, Elizabeth (Mrs. Dreany) of North Bay, Lillian (Mrs. Baisley) of B.C., and John of North Bay. Later he married Miss Harriet Spiers of Huntsville, who survives the loss of a devoted husband. To this union were born twelve children, six sons and six daughters, namely George, Bert, Edward and Reginald of Windermere, James of Windsor, Jane, (Mrs. A. Cook) of Utterson, Vada (Mrs. George Kay) of Ufford, Sarah (Mrs. W. Woodcock) of Dwight, Viola (Mrs. G. MacMillan) of Windsor, Joseph, Rebecca and Minnie dying in infancy.
The funeral was held on Sunday, Aug. 15th and was largely attended. Interment took place at Ullswater cemetery, Rev. Mr. Morrison officiating. All the children were present at the funeral.
