George and Vada (Huggard) Kay - August 1916

THE BRACEBRIDGE HERALD-GAZETTE
March 22, 1989

MRS. VADA KAY - Yesterday afternoon, Tuesday March 21, at the chapel of the Reynolds' Funeral Home, the Rev. Earl Cooper conducted the funeral service for a greatly respected resident of Bracebridge for many years, Mrs. George Kay. Mrs. Kay passed away at The Pines on Sunday, March 19, at the age of 91 years. Spring interment will take place at Ufford United Church Cemetery. Yesterday the pall-bearers were grandsons Fred, Tom and Paul Donaldson, Pat Steele, Al Leeder and Garfield McMurray.
Mrs. Kay was the beloved wife of George Kay, who predeceased her at the age of 102 years on Sept. 29, 1978. For many years they made their home on Ontario Street. They were married at Windermere on August 9, 1916. A special family occasion in which many friends joined in August 1976, was the 60th anniversary of their wedding and the 100th birthday of Mr. Kay, the event taking place at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital. During their married life Mr. and Mrs. Kay resided at Windermere, were then in Saskatchewan for some time before returning to Ufford and then coming to live in Bracebridge.
Vada Kay was born at Deebank, near Windermere, on Feb. 12, 1898, and spent her childhood and attended school in that vicinity. She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Harriet (Spiers) Huggard. Of their family Mrs. Kay's sister, Mrs. Viola MacMillan, of Toronto, and brother, Edward Huggard, of Windsor, remain.
Mrs. Kay was the beloved mother of Crystal Savoie, of Sundridge; Elsie Ferguson and Dorothy Steele, of Bracebridge; Arthur Kay, Toronto and Mona Donaldson, of Beatrice. She also leaves 23 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
In earlier years Mrs. Kay was a member of the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital staff. She enjoyed her membership in Snow Queen Rebekah Lodge and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion.
