OBITUARY - The funeral of Bert Huggard of Bracebridge took place at the chapel of the Reynolds' Funeral Home in Bracebridge on Monday, February 23rd, and was conducted by Father Scratch, S.S.J.E. Mr. Huggard will be laid to rest beside his wife Cassie at the Ufford Cemetery in the spring. Mrs. Huggard died August 6th, 1930. Mr. Huggard passed away very suddenly, on Saturday, February 21, 1976. He had been downtown shopping and it was on the way back to his apartment that he took ill and very suddenly died.
Mr. Huggard was born at Windermere on January 2nd, 1890, a son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Huggard. At Windermere he attended school and spent the early years of his life, and at Windermere he met and married Miss Cassie Howard, of Lancashire, England, in 1910. He enlisted in World War I and went overseas with the 122nd Muskoka Battalion, and returned home from Army service four years later. The family home was still at Windermere when Mrs. Huggard passed away in 1930. Later Mr. Huggard was employed with the a Forestry Company in Bracebridge, with the Department of Lands and Forests, in Camp Borden, as caretaker at Santas Village, and then as crossing guard in Bracebridge for school children until he retired in 1970.
Of the family left to mourn the loss of their father are: Pearl (Mrs. Ed Kingshott), Bent River; Frances (Mrs. Thomas Johnston), Bracebridge; Beatrice (Mrs. Harvey Scott), Barrie; Jessie (Mrs. Herb Paddison), Barrie; Aubrey Huggard, Falkenburg; Rena (Mrs. Vern Peake), Bracebridge; Howard Huggard, Matheson; Shirley (Mrs. Bruce Demitroff), Owen Sound; and Betty (Mrs. Lou Hubbard), Barrie. Two sons, Leslie and Harvey, predeceased their father.
Of a large family, only two sisters and one brother remain, Vada (Mrs. George Kay), of Bracebridge; Viola (Mrs. George MacMillan, of Toronto and Edward Huggard of Windsor. There are 45 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.
