0BITUARY - The sympathy of their many friends and the community generally has been extended to the family of Tom and Frances Johnston who have been doubly bereaved within a few weeks by their deaths. After a long illness, William James Thomas Johnston passed away peacefully on April 13. His beloved wife Frances died at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, May 31, following a long period of ill health. They had been married nearly 48 years, held the respect and affection of many friends and will be greatly missed.
Mrs. Johnston was the former Frances Huggard, daughter of the late Bert and Cassie (Howard) Huggard, and was born at Windermere, where she attended school. After she and Tom Johnston were married on June 19, 1940, they resided at the Johnston family farm at Ziska for a year, then took up residence at the McLeod Farm (now Bangor Lodge), where they were both employed, until they purchased their home at 138 Shier Street, where they lived for 44 years.
She leaves her daughters and sons, Bev (Mrs. Bob Spence), Wayne (and wife Diane, Lynn (Mrs. Phillip Ruttan), Stephen (and wife Joan), and seven grandchildren.
The funeral service at Bracebridge United Church on Friday afternoon was conducted by the Rev. David Stephens, assisted by Stephen Fram. Interment was at the United Church Cemetery. Pall-bearers were Colin MacDougald, Alvin Meeks, Peter Ruttan, George Reid, Bruce Armstrong and Earl Hammond.
