THE BRACEBRIDGE HERALD-GAZETTE
October 4, 1978

GEORGE A. KAY - The long life of Muskoka's grand old man, George A. Kay of Bracebridge, came to its close on Friday evening, September 29th, at Muskoka Nursing Home, Gravenhurst. Mr. Kay had celebrated his 102nd birthday on August 4th, and since that time he had steadily weakened. Throughout his long hospitalization in Bracebridge at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital and more recently at the nursing home in Gravenhurst, Mrs. Kay and members of their family had constantly visited him, and earlier on Friday, Mrs. Kay had spent much time at his bedside.

Mr. Kay was a native of Muskoka, having been born at Ufford on August 4, 1876, a son of William and Phoebe Kay, Watt township pioneers on Lot 14, Concession 4. He had one sister, Minnie Coutts, and brothers William, John, James, Mark, Thomas and Edgar, all of whom predeceased him. For a period of 13 years, Mr. Kay was away from Muskoka, when he was farming in western Canada, at Unity, Saskatchewan, a community where several families from Muskoka had located.

Returning to Muskoka on August 9, 1916, he married Miss Vada Huggard of Windermere. They lived at Ufford until coming to Bracebridge to make their home on Ontario Street. Besides his wife, Mr. Kay leaves four daughters and a son: Crystal Lamoureux, Elsie Ferguson, Art Kay, Dorothy Steele and Mona Donaldson.

Mr. Kay engaged in farming, but was also a skilled carpenter. Working with wood was a great pleasure for him and even in his 90's, when he was only able to be about in a wheelchair, he produced many beautiful articles of inlaid wood, several of which were exhibited at the Bracebridge Fair each year.

The funeral service, at the chapel of the Reynolds Funeral Home, was conducted on Monday afternoon by Rev. William Baughman, pastor, and Rev. James Wilson, a former pastor, of Pinegrove Baptist Church. Interment took place at the Ufford United Church cemetery. Pall-bearers were Garnet Kay, David Donaldson, Fred Ferguson, Jr., Norman Longhurst, Victor Kay, and Edward Huggard.
