DEATH OF MATT GROSE JR.
Bruce Mines Spectator
Probably the greatest shock ever received by our villagers was occasioned on Tuesday afternoon when news came that Mr. Matthew Grose Jr., had been shot while rabbit hunting. the deceased along with his friend Mr. Herb Nicholas had gone out to Mr. S. Rowe's old farm to enjoy an afternoon in hunting. In a short time they had wounded a rabbit, and promptly gave it chase in the hope of taking it alive. While they were running, the rifle of Mr. Nicholas accidently shot off, and the bullet pierced Matt in the left side lodging in his right hip. Mr. Dan McDonald and Mr. Thomas Givens who were near by responded to the cries of Mr. Nicholas and came and attended to the wounded man while Herb hurriedly ran for medical aid; but before this was procured life had become extinct. The accident occurred at 2:30 and at 3:15 death resulted from internal hemorrhage.
The deceased was concious until the end came. He caomplained of thirst once or twice and asked for a drink of water which was quickly brought to him. As the end approached he also asked to have his hands rubbed as they were cold and this request was also complied with. He and Herb had been companions for years, and after the accident he stated that he couldn't say how it happened. He seemed to realize that the gun in some way exploded. The end came with Mr. Givens watching over his wounds, and rendering all the assistance possible under the circumstances. Immediately after the fatality the Coroner Dr. Spence, of Thessalon, was summoned and after hearing all the evidence the Jury were unanimous in their verdict that the death was purely accidental.
The late Mr. Grose was born in Bruce Mines 23 years ago and was married five months ago to Miss Daisy McArthur of St. Joseph Island.
The sympathy of the people of this town for the bereaved relatives is universal. Seldom has a death occurred which wawkened feelings as profound and genuine as has this event. Toward Mr. Herb Nicholas and the family og Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas the villagers feel very deeply as they realize how intense their agony must be, even though they know that the event was purely accidental.
