Jane Sheffield Spiers
The Huntsville Forester
June 20, 1907
OBITUARY - Mrs. Jane Spiers, wife of Mr. Geo. Spiers., Sr., one of Chaffey's oldest and best known residents, died at her home on Friday last (June 14, 1907), aged 71 years, 9 months. Deceased suffered a severe attack of grippe over a year ago and, while recovering partly, never regained her former strength. She was confined to her bed for about 4 weeks.
The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, and was conducted by Rev. Joseph Munt who preached the funeral sermon at 3 P.M. in Madill's Church. Interment took place in Madill Cemetery.
The late Mrs. Spiers was born in the Province of Quebec, and moved in early life to the city of Ottawa, where she was married. She came to Huntsville with her husband and a family of 12 children in 1872. Four more children were born into the home after their arrival in Muskoka, making a total of sixteen in the family, and of those twelve are still living. All were present at the funeral on Sunday last, and a group photo was taken, which we hope to reproduce in these columns in a week or two.
The passing of Mrs. Spiers removes another of the old generation, among whom death has left several vacancies during the past 2 years. She was a singularly affable person, kindly in her disposition, and particularly fond of home life, where she was seized on the importance of her mission and responsibility. She was a regular attendant at Madill's Methodist Church, and died firmly trusting in the Great Ruler, who "doeth all things well".
IN MEMORIUM
_____________
We have laid your body, mother,
In this cold and earthly sod,
But your spirit flitted thither,
Back to your maker, God.
See her sleeping sweetly, resting
With hands clasped o'er her breast,
Pain and worldly sorrow ended,
And our mother is at rest.
Though our mother's gone forever,
Darling loved ones do not weep,
After weary nights of watching,
There's sweet rest in sleep.
Oh, we miss you, dearest mother,
More than e'er our tongues can tell,
Yet we would not call you back here,
For we know that all is well.
You have crossed beyond the river,
But to us sweet hope is given,
If we live as Christ would have us,
We shall meet you soon in Heaven.
