OBITUARY - Among the many pioneers who have passed away this winter, none is regretted more than Mr. William Henry Bray of the Madill's settlement. Mr. Bray had been troubled for some time with an affliction of the throat but not until he consulted specialists last fall was he assured that he had contracted the dread disease of cancer and that it had secured too great a hold to be checked. The issue was faced with great fortitude despite the intense suffering in the later stages until death supervened on Wednesday the 16th.
When the jubilee of Madills Church was celebrated in 1925, the Rev. Dr. Harper made fitting personal references to the pioneers who were among the first members of the church, to the nobility of their character, the service of self-sacrifice they rendered and the permanent place of esteem and respect they have earned in the widely settled community. Mr. Bray was one of those the speaker had in mind. He and his brother Daniel, happily still with us, proved themselves "worthy sons of worthy sires" and gave unstintingly of themselves to the service of the church and community until compelled by ill health to retire.
Mr. Bray was born near London, England 73 years ago but was brought to this country when two years of age, his parents settling in Brunel Township. Forty-seven years ago he married Miss Mary Elizabeth Spiers who still survives as does their three daughters, Mrs. George Rawn of Caledon Beach, Mrs. Harvey R. Skinner, Oshawa, and Mrs. John Hogarth on the homestead.. Three brothers are also living, Edward at Sibbald, Alberta, Joseph at Milberta, New Ontario, and Daniel at Martins Siding. The funeral took place at Madills Church on Saturday, following a brief service at the home and an enlarged service at the church.
