OBITUARY - The death of Chester Spiers, former well known resident of Huntsville, in the Douglas Memorial Hospital, Fort Erie, on Sunday, May 11th, came as a distinct shock to his family and his friends in this community. He was in his 56th year and had been ill for only a very short time.
The eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Spiers, Chester served in the First World War with his 122nd Battalion. After returning home he worked for the railroad at the Allendale branch for a time, later moving to Fort Erie, where he had been employed continuously by the railroad until the time of his death.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, the former Miss Edna Brooks, 3 sons and 1 daughter: Wilfred, in Germany with the armed forces; Jack, with the R.C.E.M.E., in London, Ont.; Ethel May, Toronto; and Billy, at home. Also one grandson. There are also 5 sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Sam Skinner, Oshawa; Mrs. Norman Head, Huntsville; Mrs. Doug Newman, Huntsville; Mrs. Fred Banyard, Toronto; Mrs. Percy Head, Huntsville; Hilton, Barrie; Elmer, Oshawa; and Harvey, Oriole. One brother, Ernie, of Detroit, predeceased him 3 months ago.
The funeral service was held in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church here on Wednesday, May 14th, conducted by Rev. Fred Berner. Interment followed in the Hutcheson Memorial Cemetery. The many floral tributes bore silent testimony to the high esteem in which he was held.
