JAMES PARIS STRAHAN
B.: 4/10/1881, Carriere,Pearl River County, Ms. D: 12/24/1938. Brd: Caney Cemetery,
Baxterville, Lamar County Ms. Mrd: 4112/1900, Marion County Ms. by Rev. John Dobson, LOUISA JANE BURGE, B: 1/13/1884, Poplarville, Pearl River County, Ms. D: 6/2511971. Brd: Caney Cemetery, Lamar County Ms.; dau. of GEORGE WASHINGTON BURGE & ISLENA RESTER James Paris Strahan was usually called "Paris" or "J.P." He had brown hair and blue-gray eyes. He had very little schooling but learned to read and write with the help of his wife. He was never in the armed services. Louisa Jane had brown hair and brown eyes. She attended school in Baxterville, Ms. as far as the fourth grade level. She enjoyed drawing scenery with crayons, water colors, or whatever was available. As far as we know, none of these drawings exist today. Her hair had only been cut once during her lifetime and she always kept it pulled back into a tight bun. James Paris, at one time, was a "traveling salesman" for Martin's Coffee in Picayune, Ms. for about two or three years. (Residents of Picayune, Ms. will remember that Martin's Coffee Company was located on East Canal Street, was at one time ~ local restaurant and then housed an antique store _ today the W - torn Auto Store is located directly across the street from it and the building is still in use.)
James Paris had worked as a foreman for GM&O Railroad and the family lived in a section house. (Submitted by Mrs. Mildred Strahan Greene, Creole, )
George Washington Burge and Islena (or Asaline as Rester family records call her) were married 7/10/1868 in Hancock County Ms. She is buried on the bank of Crane Creek in the Progress Community, but there Is no marker at her grave. She was the daughter of FREDERICK RESTER, III & MARY GOLDMAN who lived in the
Will Smith Community, which is about two miles west of the present Juniper Grove Church, Pearl River County, Ms. After Mary Goldman Rester died, Frederick Rester III married PRISCILLA SMITH-BILBO, the widow of G. Washington Bilbo, on 9/16/1862, Hancock County Ms. However, they were unable to live together peacefully as their children could not get along (they each had large families) so they agreed to live separately but they never obtained a divorce. At the time of his death, Frederick Rester III was living on Wolf River in the Progress Community. We do not know when he died, but he is buried beside his first wife, Mary Goldman, in the Will Smith Cemetery west of Juniper Grove. There are no markers at their graves. (Ref: Rester Family History records).
In the 1900 PRC census James was listed as a 18 yr old day laborer living in beat 4 next to brother Thomas, with wife Jane age 16 married less than a yr with no children.
