Ruthven Cornelius George [Male] b. 20 MAR 1833 Chesterfield Co South Carolina - d. 8 JUN 1907 Welsh Neck Cemetery, Society Hill, in Darlington County South Carolina.

From a document called "Memory Roll" we find that Cornelius Ruthven and his brother Hugh were in Company D, 2nd Regiment Artillery South Carolina, CSA. This would mean that he was a part of a Cannon crew. They are shown as Being from Darlington County, South Carolina. Hugh is shown as killed at the battle of Legareville. The battle of Legareville was during the defense of Charleston South Carolina. Hugh killed on December 25, 1863. This is exactly 10 years after his mothers death. Cornelius in 1866 names a son Hugh. At the close of the war Cornelius is shown as being in Greensboro, North Carolina. On the 1850 census we find Cornelius as being in the Steer pen District of Chesterfield Co, South Carolina. He is shown as age 17 living with his father Daniel. He is shown as a farmer. and born in South Carolina.
On the 1880 census he is shown as age 47 wife Elizabeth J age 46. He is a farmer, in Steer Pens district of Chesterfield Co South Carolina. Cornelius Died on June 8, 1907 and is buried with his wife in the Welsh Neck Baptist church cemetery, Society Hill, South Carolina.

John William Ruthven is found on the 1880 census as age 19 living with his father Cornelius. He was a Farmer in Chesterfield Co, South Carolina. He and his wife Margaret Jane Martin had 8 children . John Died September 13 1926. He and Margaret are buried at the Welsh Neck Baptist church cemetry, Society Hill, South Carolina.

Ruthven Hugh Alexander [Male] b. ABT 1866 Chesterfield Co South Carolina - d. 6 OCT 1930 Chesterfield Co South Carolina

Hugh is found on the 1880 census as living at home age 18. Hugh and his wife are buried at the Welch Neck Baptist Church cemetery, Society Hill, South Carolina. Hugh died October 6, 1930, his wife Margaret lived another 41 years to the age of 102 years.

Ruthven Daniel [Male] b. ABT 1792 Scotland - d. 17 APR 1866 Chesterfield Co South Carolina

Daniel and Sally Graham Ruthven came from Scotland to live in the new world where there was plenty of land to farm and grow a garden. They started with a dream of a home on a farm to raise their children and enjoy life with given land as soon as they could qualify their plans. The land was given in South Carolina on the North Prong of Cedar Creek in Chesterfield County between Patrick and Society Hill, South Carolina. The land was surveyed by the state as 1,374 acres to be cleared, trees felled for a house, and land smoothed for planting. Daniel and Sally had been living in North Carolina. Daniel Joined Antioch Baptist Church January 8, 1842 by letter from North Carolina.
Sally Joined Antioch Baptist on Sept. 9, 1843. After Sally's death the land was surveyed again for division with the older children living on the land with families. This survey was on November 17, 1854 as recorded in land grants in S.C. Vol. 89-1845-1872.
Sally Graham Ruthven died December 25, 1853, and is buried in the Antioch Church Cemetery, Darlington County South Carolina. Her tomb stone has the following words "She was a native of Scotland; a member of the Baptist Church for many years and friend to all who knew her" It is believed that Daniel was buried on his farm land as he may have requested and his grave has not been found. He died April 17, 1866,
according to a sale beginning in June 1866. Daniel and Sally Ruthven were the beginning of the Ruthven's in South Carolina and they had many children. Their lives of good character bless all who knew the family.
Daniel Ruthven and wife Sally are shown on the 1850 census as being in the Steer Pen district of Chesterfield Co,South Carolina. Daniel is shown as age 58 and Sally is shown as age 55. Daniel is shown to be a farmer with $1,000 personel property and both Daniel and Sally were born in Scotland.

Ruthven Alexander Graham [Male] b. 9 MAR 1818 South Carolina - d. 24 SEP 1890 Philadephia

Alexander was born on March 9, 1818 and is found in Antioch Church records. He was shown as being a member in the minuets of a meeting in1838, Along with his younger brother Robert. He is shown to have appointed a committee to see Brother Barfield in the minuets of March 12 , 1842. He is shown on a committee to extend a call to Rev John Culpepper on September 7, 1850. Alexander with his family left South Carolina and moved to Philadephia Mississippi, where he died on Sept. 24, 1890. He purchased 41.14 acres of land in Kemper County Mississippi dated 3/15/1854. He is buried at the Tucker Baptist Church, Kemper Co, Ms. Alexander is not found in Chesterfield County census in 1850. A part of this information comes from a grandson Claude Ruthven. Alexander served in the Civil War in the State of Miss Cav. Troups Gamblin's County His rank was Coporal.
