Benjamin moved his family to Montgomery County, New York about 1790 and settled at Amsterdam where he worked as a blacksmith.
His will mentioned his wife, Phebe; only daughter, Phebe French; and sons, Stephen M., Caleb C., Isaac B, David, Jonas, Benjamin and Obediah M.
The Executors were his wife, John Crane and Timothy Crane of Charlton. Witnesses were John W. Crane, John Kested and Henry Kested.

Jonas settled in Hamilton County, Ohio, and founded the village of Harrison on December 8, 1813.
In 1815 and 1817 he bought over 1,000 acres with his brother in Jackson County, Indiana. He moved to Indiana in 1817 and settled in Fischlies Mill (later named Rockford) where he ran a tavern, hotel and a country stand.
In August of 1819 he was appointed County Inspector of flour, beef and pork.
A post office was established at Crane Tavern on April 26, 1820, and Jonas was named as the first postmaster of the village.
