Elijah moved to Bennington, Vermont in September, 1777, and enlisted under the command of Captain Abel Marsh. Joined Lt. Zebulon Lyon's company and served as a guard to Colonel Stone's party on a trip from Windsor, Connecticut, to Springfield. He moved west to West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, after the war and then moved to Poultney, Vermont.
