John is shown on the records of the "Friends" church as an elder in the church. This church was probably located in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, as that is where his eight children were born. On October 19, 1711, "Elder" John was chosen as County Overseer in the church. This was probably "overseer" of the poor in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. John's will was probated in Pasquotank County, North Carolina, January 1739. To sons Joseph and John he bequeathed "my Manner plantation".

John Morris was under age in October, 1720, and is mentioned in the list of suffering on account of church rates of priest's dues. On February 4, 1762, at age 46, he was chosen to be the recorder of deaths and births in the church.
On February 4, 1762, Mary MORRIS, Jr., was assigned as clerk of the church. It was reported that she had intentions to marry Silas Draper.
