Gene McClendon after 66 years of richly blessing his family's lives, Dallas Eugene "Gene " Mc Clendon went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 31, 2000, at his lifelong residence in the Gillsburg community after an eight-month bout with Leukemia.
Visitation will be from 5-10 tonight at Gillsburg Baptist Church, continuing there at 9 a. m. Thursday. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. in the church with the Rev. Albert J. Ogden and the Rev. Millard J. Paul officiating. Grave side services will follow immediately at McClendon Cemetery. Hartman Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. McClendon was an Army veteran former dairyman and longtime public servant and businessman. His public service began in 1968 when elected justice of the peace in Amite CO
He then served 16 years as Amite CO district 5 supervisor. After a four- year retirement he then served eight years as sheriff of Amite CO
Mr. McClendon was born July 15, 1934, to Willie Eugene McClendon and Effie Adams McClendon.
Pallbearers will be Don Bartlett, Percy Brister, Donald Butler, Ivy McDaniel, Jr., Eli McElveen, Carl L. Spillman, Dowling "Nookie" Wales, and Princeton Wilson.
Honorary pallbearers are Mike Bridwell, Roscoe Goynes, Harry Lee Lilly, Reece Nunnery, Jimmie Stewart, Richy Stratton, Joey Wall, Richard Vaughn, Amite CO officials who served with Mr. McClendon and all law enforcement officials, on every level, who worked with him during his tenure sheriff.
Those left behind to cherish his memory include his wife of 43 years, Marie Whittingotn McClendon of Gillsburg; one brother and sister-in-law, Virgile E. and Margaret Smith McClendon; one sister, Lurline D. McClendon; one son and daughter-in-law Rusty and Trina Brister Mc Clendon of Gillsburg; one daughter and son-in-law Debra and Steeve Moore of the Hebron comm unity; three grandchildren, Landon Moore, Katie Moore and Dallas McClendon and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
His family said, "Mr. Gene's smile, sense of humor and favorite comment, "Everything's gonna be all right," will be sorely missed by all.
