Census records have provided the birth year of Francis Brown as being between 1750 and 1760. He died in Lawrence County (Ms.) in 1832. His succession papers provide his legatees. His wife, Mary, preceded him in death, as she does not appear in his husehold in 1830. Much research has been done to determine Mary's maiden name, to no avail. Good guesses might be Speirs (Spears), Pool, Paul, Paulk, or Powell.
Since the last five of Francis and Mary's children were born in Georgia, we know that Francis was in Georgia, for sure, between 1794 and 1806. After studying all the Francis Browns in Georgia who were alive during this time, my conclusion is that Francis Brown lived in Jefferson County, Ga. during those years. After studying all records available from Jefferson County, no ties to any of the other Browns there could be identified. This leads me to believe Francis was there with his inlaws. Until that family can be identified, it would be impossible to track Francis and Mary back before those years in Georgia. It is possible their two older children were born in North Carolina, but that is still uncertain.
Although there were other Browns who settled in Lawrence County, Mississippi, during those early years of 1817-1820, when Francis appeared, no positive connections can be made. On one early tax list, Francis is beside Bartlet Brown. Bartlet died during those first years in Lawrence County. After having researched over 10 Bartlet Browns, I cannot positively indentify the one in Lawrence County with any of the others. Perhaps this is a brother of Francis.

Francis Brown
of White Sand Creek
Francis Brown was b.c. 1760 and died in 1832 in Lawrence Co. MS. Parents unknown at this time. There was a Bartlett/Bartley Brown of the same age group living in the same township in Lawrence Co. No connection to him has been made, but DNA testing has indicated they are possibly related. Francis married Mary Spiers previous to 1786. At least one other person has suggested Mary is a second wife, but I have seen no evidence to suggest that.
Children:
1. Henry b.c. 1786. For years, we have believed the Henry who died in Simpson Co. MS in 1858 is Henry, the son of Francis, as named in Francis’ estate papers. However, DNA testing has indicated we are not related, although we are more closely related to each other than to any other Browns in the project. Henry married Susannah Statham, but she was not the mother of his children. Census records indicate this Henry had 4 daughters and 1 son besides Wiley and John P. John P. is missing in the 1850 census, yet there is a John Brown living with one of Francis’ grandsons, George D. Brown, in St. Tammany Parish, who fits perfectly. Then, when John P.’s first wife died and he was living in Texas, he married a daughter of Sterling Tarver and Mary Brown, daughter of Francis Brown. She lived 2 counties away, so it does not appear to be coincidence. In those times, people often married first cousins as second spouses. So, our paper trail indicates Henry of Simpson Co. is the son of Francis, but DNA refutes this.
2. Agnes b. 1790, d.c. 1833 in Lawrence Co. MS. Married John C. Lambert in Georgia. They settled in Lawrence Co. MS. Children: James b. 11 Feb. 1810 who m. Cynthia Ann Douglas; Peter b. March 1812 who m. Mary Ann Neal; Mary b. 1813 who m. Robert Scott Givens and Andrew Holton; John b. 1814 who m. Sarah Douglas; Andrew b. 1818 who m. Argent Netherland and Dollie McCloud; Elizabeth b. 1822 who m. Tilmon Delaughter; Thomas M. or W. b. 1823 who m. Tincy Garner; Hiram b. 1824 who m. Martha Jane King; an unknown female; Joseph b. 12 Nov. 1829 who m. Esther Netherland; Gideon M.C. b. 16 Jan. 1831 who m. Malinda E. Garner; and Erbin b. 27 July 1833 who m. Avamarilla Netherland.
3. Margaret b. 24 Dec. 1794 Georgia (probably Jefferson Co.), d. 16 April 1880 Hancock Co. MS, buried Gainesville Cem. in Gainesville, MS. Married 1. Daniel Butler in GA and 2. Moody Holleman in Lawrence Co. MS 13 June 1820. Butler children: Lucy Elizabeth b. 17 June 1812 who m. Lorenzo Dow Fenn, and Maryan b. 25 Dec. 1814 who m. Major Ferris. Holleman children: Alexander b. 6 Feb. 1821, Wilson b. 6 Sept. 1822, Jeremiah b. 2 Oct. 1824 who m. Mary Bates; George Washington b. 16 Feb. 1826 who m. Obediance M. ?; Patrick Henry b. 9 Dec. 1827; Caroline b. 14 June 1829 who m. a Mitchell; John Wesley b. 30 May 1831 who m. Annie Jane Murphy; Emeline b. 22 March 1833; Feliscian (Felicy Anna) b. 15 Jan. 1835 who m. Joseph Bates; Elouisa or Louretta b. 4 March 1837 who m. David Moye.
4. Francis D. Brown b. 10 Feb. 1802, probably Jefferson Co. GA, d. 25 April 1879 Lincoln Co. MS of neumonia while living in the home of Jonathan Rials and Susan Lambert. Married c. 1823 in Covington Co. MS to Elizabeth Coulter. Children: George D., Mary, Susan Jane, John Morrison, Ann Louisa, and Sarah Matilda.
5. Mary A. b. 22 April 1803, probably Jefferson Co. GA, d. 25 March 1878 Tyler Co. TX. Married Sterling Tarver 10 Jan. 1822 in Lawrence Co. MS. I suspect the first two of these children were Sterling’s by another marriage or were Mary’s born before they married. Children: Delia b. 28 Sept 1819 MS who m. William Thomas; Mary Ann who m. Henry C. Steen; Silvisa b.c. 1825 Lawrence Co. MS who m. Henry Castelow; Christopher Columbus b. 28 Sept. 1826 Lawrence Co. MS who m. Purcilla Ann Castelow; William Walter b. 1829 Lawrence Co. MS who m. Peronesia Hardy; John H. b. 1831 who m. Celia ?; Emeline b. 1835 Lawrence Co. MS who m. Bill R. Lee; Sterling b. 1837 Lawrence Co. MS; Margaret b. 4 Dec. 1838 Lawrence Co. MS who m. John P. Brown, son of Henry; Louisa b. 1842 Lawrence Co. MS; George b. 1843 Lawrence Co. MS; Shockley J. b. 1845 Lawrence Co. MS; Saral C. b. 1846.
6. Geor ge D. b. 1790-1800 probably Jefferson Co. GA , died between June 14-July 21, 1834 in Lawrence Co. MS. Married Jane T. Johnson, daughter of Jordan Johnson, 20 Dec. 1828 Lawrence Co. MS. Only known child is Margaret b. 1831 who m. Charles King. I suspect a Jordan Brown might be another child. His age indicates he could have been born in this marriage, and been named after his grandfather.
7. Elizabeth b. 1805, probably Jefferson Co. GA, married 1. Josiah/Jonah/Joseph Athens 20 June 1826 Lawrence Co. MS 2. Samuel Hayes 5 Nov. 1837 Lawrence Co. MS. Elizabeth probably died in Hancock Co. MS. Children: 4 females unknown; William J. Athens b. 1832, m. Mrs. Isabella Parker Ames; Elizabeth Hayes b. 1838; Harriet Sheriff who m. a Hutchins; Martha Hayes b. 1842; Eliza M. Hayes b. 1844.
