Between 1797 and 1799 James followed his brother, Matthew, to the Mississippi Territory, settling in what is now Washington County, Alabama where he witnessed a deed with M. Bilbo on April 17, 1799.

In 1802, James purchased land from Owen D. Sullivant, for which he made application for land grant October 29, 1802. This grant was later denied due to pre-emption. Of this land, sixty acres was sold to Amos Read prior to the rejection of claim.

In 1809 the minutes of Washington County Court report a suit of Amos Read and his wife and William D. Phelps and wife against James Bilbo and Hugh Gilliand. Later the suit was amended to include John Johnson, Jr., Guardian of H. Gilliland and John Hinson, Adm. of O. Sullivant deceased as defendants.

The marriage of Jacques (James) and Mary took place before Oct. 1, 1754, as Mary, wife of James Bilbo released dower right then. Marriage record has not been located but that she was a Hobson is seen in the will of her father, Nicholas Hobson, dated May 25, 1758, Brunswick County, and recorded December 5, 1758. He does not name a daughter Mary in his will,, but names his grandson, Nicholas Bilbo. Another custom then was to name the oldest son after the mother's father. To prove that Mary was a Hobson it was necessary to prove Nicholas was the son of James. Deed Book 6, Page 181, Mecklenburg County, Va. - December 19, 1780 - James Bilbo to Nicholas Bilbo "of divers good causes and consideration thereunto moving by me, especially for the love and affection for said Nicholas Bilbo," and asks for consideration of five shillings for parcel of land being on Roanoke River and Cotten Creek, on James Bilbo's line. In further support of the wife, Mary: John Hobson, mentioned in will of Nicholas Hobson as son, made his will October 28, 1767, which was probated January 6, 1768, in Parish of St. Paul, Georgia, mentioned a sister, Mary Bilbo.
