Rutherford County was established from territory of Tryon, Co. Tryon County had been formed from the Western Part of Mecklenburg Co. in 1768. he Rutherford Territory extended in theory, to the Mississippi River. his included a good part of what is now Tennessee.
The Van Zandt's were among the early families of Rutherford County, NC. rom January 1781 thru April 1786, Rutherford County Tax List referred to a Captain Vinsaant's Company, with the males assigned to his Company. A company referred to a division of the county corresponding to the minor political division of townships today. A captain assisted in listing axes, collecting taxes, acting as a peace officer, frequently serving as a justice of the peace, and also serving as the head of the militia in his district. Garrett was summoned April 1781, to serve at the next court as a Grand Juror. On the 1782 Tax List of Rutherford Co., Garrett Vinsant was taxed on 200 acres.
