The Rev Andrew Yeargain came from Wales about 1735 and settled in Virginia. A young man of fine appearance, Caucasian type, with more than ordinary education for that age, sought the hand of Miss Oney Bowles, and was married January 3, 1757 in Goochland County, Va. The Rev Andrew's field of labor as a minister was in the Roanoke and James River Valley of Virginia. The crowning glory of his manhood was a large family of 10 sons and one daughter. He and his son's filled many useful positions of trust during the stormy period of the Revolutions of 1776.
According to the published minutes of the Methodist Conference, held at Fluvannia, VA, May 18, 1779, we find Andrew Yeargan, one of the examining committee to ascertain the fitness of candidates for the Ministry and in that year, he and William Moore traveled to the Tar River Circuit. In 1780 (April 24 Conference) held in Baltimore, Rev Yeargan was pastor of the Yadkin Circuit.
The number of Ministers in the Methodist Conference at that date was (42); Laymen 8,504 about 1770, notice the influence of Rev Andrew Yeargan for some 8 years as a local Preacher, so impressed the builders, especially Mr. Wright, appointed by John Wesley, working under the auspices of Francis Ashbury, that the first Methodist Chapel built in Virginia was named Yeargan's Chapel (see A B Hyde's "Story of Methodism") page 33 published 1887. AB Hyde spell's this first in Virginia, "Yeargon's". We think this is incorrect and should be "Yeargan's".
Taken in part from: The Yeargan Family, by Leonidas Hilary Yeargan and Hilary H. L. Yeargan, MD, dated 1890.
In getting the facts regarding the Yeargan Family in America, writes the author, I had doubts that the Rev Andrew was the only representative of our Family, These Doubts are not entirely removed, but from all the testimony of the family now living, and what I learned traditionally from my father, Bartlett and having my grandfather Benjamin Yeargan, son of Andrew, the above are the facts as we have found.
