PICAYUNE— Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dixie Baptist Church for Mr. J.C. Spiers, 89, who passed away August 4, 2007 at his home in Dixie Community. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Spiers was a longtime member of Dixie Baptist Church and a resident of the Dixie Community for nearly 60 years. Retired, he worked for more than 30 years as a switchman for Southern Railroad; was a Mason for 55 years and a member of United Transportation Union 584 (UTU). He also served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCCs) during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Colita Moonyean Tucker; three brothers, Pascal Spiers, Buford Spiers and Jewel Spiers; and two sisters, Voncile Pedersen and Mary Thigpen.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rita Spiers of the Dixie Community; two sons Bobby Spiers of Carnes and Joe Spiers of Amory; sister, Colita Nyitrai of Hamburg, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.
