Gen. John C. Pemberton, C.S.A., Commanding, on the 4th day of July, 1863, do in pursuance of the terms of said capitulation, give this my solemn parole under oath--
That I will not take up arms again against the United States, nor serve in any military, police, or constabulary force in any Fort, Garrison or field work, held by the Confederate States of America, against the United States of America, nor as guard of prisons, depots or stores, nor discharge any duties usually performed by officers or soldiers against the United States of America until duly exchanged by the proper authorities.

The 1870 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 22, occupation as Housekeeper, born in Miss.
The 1880 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 22 (should have been 32), occupation as keepinghouse, born in Mississippi, both parents born in Miss.
The 1900 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 52, born Feb., 1848, with 13 children, 10 surviving (this should have been 11, although Marion Hall Lee doesn't appear in the household).
The 1910 Pike County, Ms., census shows age for Mary J. as 63, married once for 44 years, 13 children with 11 surviving, born in Mississippi, both parents born in Mississippi.
Mary Jane Rushing's parents were Wiley J. Rushing (1825-1905) and Nancy C.May (Rushing)(1827-1904). Much detail about the Rushing family can be found in the book "Matthew Rushing Descendants in South Mississippi 1810 - 1995" by Helen Lyndola Rushing (Jones). Another good information source for the Rushing family is World Family Tree, Vol. 12, Tree #3424. This tree contains 3,291 individuals and was compiled by Archie Rushing, Jr., who lives in Bradenton, Fl., July 2000. World Family Tree publishes a multiple CD ROM set for use with personal computers and Family Tree Maker software.
