(The following is a letter from Dewey McKenzie, husband of Betty Weatherford, daughter of Lela Cagle, sister of Amanda Cagle, wife of Archie Rushing Sr.)
"Betty and I were happy to get your work on the Rushings. I was especially interested in the McKenzie connection. My research yielded a little different information regarding Levi Rushing's third wife, Nancy Ann Elizabeth McKenzie. I believe she is the daughter of James McKenzie and Rebecca Ann Boutwell.
"I am descended from Azarell (Census shows Azearl) McKenzie and Lydia Ann Carson. Ann died in 1851 at or immediately after childbirth. The baby was Margaret Ann McKenzie, who married George Thomas, and she was my mother's grandmother. Stories she told my mother are a significant motivation for me to be doing research.
"Azarell's second wife was Julia Ann Thomas, daughter of Charles and Betsy Richardson Thomas.
"My research indicates roughly the following: McKenzie line in Marion, Walthall and Pike Counties, Ms. They don't belong with other south Miss. McKenzies.
"Alexander McKenzie b. 1722 in Scotland. His last wife was Mary Rogers, widow of Josiah Lewis. She had 3 Lewis children: Josiah, Jr., Sarah who married Robert Elliott, and Elizabeth who married William Rowell 'Who died within half a decade.'
"Alexander and Mary had two sons, Daniel and David McKenzie. While the boys were still toddlers, Alexander died. The boys were both born by 1784.
"During the 1790s Mary moved across the state of South Carolina to Beaufort District, along the Savannah River. The census shows her there in 1800 and 1810. In 1810 two of her children secured passports for themselves and families and went to Miss. Territory (Daniel McKenzie and his half sister Elizabeth Rowell). All the other children were living beside Mary in separate households. In 1811 David McKenzie and his family, along with his father-in-law's family went to Miss. Terr. In 1816, all the siblings were living beside each other in Pike County, except Josiah. I believe he stayed in South Carolina with his mother, Mary, until she died. By 1810 she was over 70.
"The McKenzie brothers lived adjacent to each other and attended the same churches, etc.
"David and his wife, Nancy Lewis, had four daughters by 1816, but we don't know their individual birth dates. In 1817 their oldest son, Azarell, was born. In 1819 Ara appeared, followed by Lucretia in 1823, Nathan D. in 1825 and Nancy in about 1829. (Nancy married Howard Tulles.)
"Daniel and his wife, Sarah Lewis (David and Daniel married sisters - daughters of Joseph B. Lewis) had the following:
James, born about 1808 in South Carolina. He married Rebecca A. Boutwell.
Some of their children were: William A., b. 1839; Daniel M., b. about 1840; Sarah A.M., b. about 1842; Nancy A.E., b. about 1844; John T., b. about 1846; and Alexander W., b. 1849.
"Daniel's other children were Suzanne, Alexander, Eliza, Martha, William, John B., Emily, Elizabeth, and Sarah A.
"Note that James, Daniel's oldest son, named his children after his parents and siblings.
"Most of Marion County's McKenzies are mostly but not all, descended from James (Daniel's son) and Nathan and Ara. Of course, by now they are all scattered everywhere. (In 1856, Daniel's son Alexander W. McKenzie, a Baptist preacher, moved to Texas and so some of our relations are out there.
Dewey R. McKenzie."
