Alexander enlisted in the Confederate Army Company "C" 38th Ms. Volunteers in April 1861 at gainesville, Ms.

In the 1870 Hancock Ms. Census, Alexander was listed as a 35 yr old farmer with his wife Artimisia Jones age 28 and their 6 children. In the 1880 census Alexander was listed as a 53 yr old farmer living in beat 5 with his wife and their 8 children. In the 1900 Hancock County census Alex was listed as a 70 yr old Farmer living in beat 2 with wife Artie age 60 married 46 yrs, having had 11 children with 9 living. Living with them at the time was son Jackson age 24, farmer, son Martin age 19 and grandson Ellis V. age 12 granddaughter Artimisia age 9, and granddaughter Bertie age 5, children of Alex's son John Samuel and his wife Melissa Burge.
