Event: Event 2: 30 MAY 1927

When Tine was a baby he was sort of small or "tiny." Because of this the family called him "Tiny." The name stuck and he bacame "Tine." (This information was told to Archie Jr. by their mother.)

Tine was 12 years 6 months when he died. He and his brother, Claude, had worked in the garden most of a hot June day. Tine decided to go with some friends to visit a local creek where a railroad tressle crossed. They climbed on the tressle walking to the part that was over the water and commenced throwing things into the creek. He became over balanced and fell. He grabbed to try to keep from falling in and it threw him under the tressle on rotten pilling. He could swim, otherwise he would have drowned. There were none of his friends big enough that could pull him out, he had to swim out. He didn't completely get over it, the wounds were healing. He had broken ribs from it and they were healing. Mama was helping daddy in the garden, Tine had to go to the doctor's office, about a half mile. Instead of walking like he was susposed to, he rode his bicycle. The doctor wasn't quite ready to see him He liked to tease the doctor so he rode around and around his house and got too hot. That agravated the tetanus germ. At that time shots were not readily available. Doctor's statement on the certificate of death states, "I hereby certify, that I attended the deceased from May 30, 1927 to June 2, 1927 and that death occurred on the date stated above, 6 a.m. The cause of death was as follows: Tetanus from splinter of old wood. Removed wood and drainage." Death occurred at Columbia Hospital, Columbia, Ms.

Hattiesburg American, March 25, 1922.

(headline) MATCHES SET FIRE, LITTLE GIRL BURNED
Playing with matches in the yard of her home at 213 Unetta Street, Avery Lerline Rushing, three and one-half year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Rushing, caught fire to her clothing, and received burns that proved fatal last night, causing death at 7 o'clock.
The screams of the child as she ran up and down the street with her clothing in flames, attracted the attention of neighbors, who ran out and extinguished the fire. However, it was too late, as nearly the entire clothing had burned away, causing terrible burns on the lower part of the little girl's body.
Every effort was made to ease the little one's suffering, but it was evident that nothing could be done to save her.
The body was taken to Sumrall this morning for interment.
=======================================================
Avery Lerline's sister, Ettress, shared her remembrance of the incident:
Mama had gone to visit a neighbor to help them do something, a two or three houses from us. She left us, me and Avery Lerline, with her next door neighbor and she had made Avery Lerline a little yard broom like hers, and they were sweeping the yard. When they finished the yard sweeping the neighbor had to go in the house for some reason. I was at the back of the house gathering toys and things to make a play house with. I heard Avery Lerline scream. I dropped everything and jumped and run. When I got around to the front the neighbor was upon Every Lerline and was pulling all her clothes off. Burned her hands pretty badly. Daddy had to be out of town working. He came home when he stepped on a nail and it went through his foot, shoes and all. At the same day Avery Lerline died.

The incident took place in the morning part of the day. Mama was always helping neighbors and she took Beatrice with her, she was the baby. Our next door neighbor thought much of Avery Lerline. She always felt, she treated her like she was her own. And where she got a hold of her matches nobody ever found out. Because mama had the house locked, we wasn't susposed to go in. The next door neighbor was taking care of us.

She did not run up and down the street as news item stated. She screamed and started running, the neighbor apparently had already started out of her house. Because she caught her but that material and flannel were flamable. She wouldn't have been running up and down the street. As a matter of fact, I don't even remember, but it seems to me like the next door neighbor's yard was fenced. She was probably inside a fenced yard.
