Buried Boyd Cemetary Salem Community[Spence.FTW]
According to the family record of Susan Elizabeth Spence Pearson May 10, 1970
My mother, when little, lived at Salem, a short ways farther up hill from Albert Pigott place. Her brother Josiah and her father went off to Civil War. She, her mother and three sisters were left to live on thier own. They farmed; couldn't buy salt or matches. Used cart with wood block wheels for transportation. They dug up dirt from old smokehouse and boiled it to get salt. Knocked flints together to get fire. Didn't know anything about such a thing as a stove. Her brother died in the war and was buried at Jackson, Tennessee. Her father, David Gartman, got sick and was being brought home, but died when he got to Holmesville, right close to home.
