In 1838 George and Louisa Buxton were living on King's Highway in Darien, CT with their first three children. On November 11, 1938 William Harvey was preparing to return home from a visit to his grandfather, Abijah Scofield. The Scofield home was in Springdale, a part of Stamford, CT just west of the Noroton River which is the border between Darien and Stamford. It was about a five mile walk to the Buxton home in Darien. The Noroton River is typical of the many small rivers in New England. It was wide and deep enough to require crossing a bridge. There was no highway bridge near the Scofield home, so when William and his aunt left to return to Darien they crossed a rickety foot bridge. On the bridge the railing gave way and both fell into the water. The Norwalk Sentinal reported the incident saying "the aunt was saved but the boy was not". The notice in the Sentinal contained many errors but was sufficient to confirm the entry in the Buxton Family Bible regarding the death by drowning of little William.
