Shortly after being stricken, Mrs. Speir was taken to Women's Hospital, Baltimore, for treatment. She returned six weeks later, apparently much improved, but suffered a relpse in the last five weeks, and three weeks ago was removed to the Miner's Hospital, here. Mrs. Speir was a patient sufferer throughout her entire illness, seldom complaining, but often concerned about the welfare of others. She was a generous, big-hearted woman whose every act was filled with love and kindness toward others. The extent of her charitable work and personal work among the poor of Frostburg will never be known. She will be missed in this community. Mrs. Speir took great pride in her family. She was the mother of eight children. Mrs. Robert H. Cook, who died January 8, was a daughter, and under the guardian eye of a fond and loving grandmother, Noel and Marie Cook, a son and daughter of the deceased, were cared for by Mrs. Speir and her family until the time of her death. Besides the husband, Hugh Speir, three sons, Andrew, Engle, and Nelson Speir, and four daughters, Mrs. William Spates, Mrs. James Jeffries, Mrs. William Stevens, and Mrs. John Stewart, survive. Three grandchildren, Noel and Marie Cook, and Hugh Speir Jeffries, also survive. Mrs. Speir was a life-long member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Speir were married in Lonaconing in 1882, coming to Frostburg shortly after where they established a home. Funeral services will be conducted at the family home, Water and Ormond streets, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Raymond E. Mathard, pastor of the Broadway Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. Paul Welfley, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, will conduct the services. Interment will be in Allegany Cemetery. The Cumberland Evening Times, July 17, 1923
