George "Pappy" Speir, 81, of 12420 Carlos Road, SW, Frostburg, died Wednesday, April 26,2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland. Born on Oct. 31, 1918, in Carlos, he was the son of the late Hugh and Bella (Stevenson) Speir Sr. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Allen Speir, James "Butch" Speir and Hugh Speir Jr.; and one sister, Beth Speir. Mr. Speir was a retired route salesman for the former Old German Brewery. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served in the South Pacific. He was a Golden Eagle of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Arie #1273, Frostburg; a member of Farrady Post #24 American Legion, Frostburg, for 33 years, member of Old Rail Post #6025 VFW, Mt. Savage, and the Lonaconing Republican Club. He loved his flower garden. Surviving are two sisters, Esabella Skidmore, Midlothian, Erma Albright, Hagerstown; numerous nieces, nephews; and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jimmie Blair officiating. Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Farrady Post 24 American Legion Honor Guard.
