June 02, 2008 - Cumberland Times-News - CUMBERLAND - Byron Lee "Barney" Valentine, 70, of Cumberland, died Sunday, June 1, 2008, at his residence. Born Sept. 24, 1937, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Wanetta (Valentine) Williams, and her husband, Frank Williams. Barney was a 1956 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He served an enlistment in the U.S. Navy and had 20 years of service in the U.S. Reserves. Barney belonged to the Teamsters, Local 453. He retired with 30 years of service as a driver, having worked some of those years for the Yellow Freight Systems. He is survived by his wife, Lana K. (Speir) Valentine; two daughters, Kelly L. King and husband Doug, Grantsville, and Kay L. Speir, Potomac Park; a son, Brian K. Valentine, Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson, Asa James King; a sister, Marcie Wilson, Cumberland; a brother-in-law, Larry Speir and wife Karen, Glen Rock, Pa.; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Leedom officiating. Interment will be in MSVC-Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Doug King, Walter Gilbert, Jeff Hoblitzell, Gene Auvil, Harold MacDonald and Jim Swauger. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Holshey and Miro Paunovic. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center (WVU), P.O. Box 9300, Morgantown, WV 26506. The family wishes to express special thanks to the 9th Floor Bone Marrow Unit at Ruby Memorial Hospital (WVU), including Dr. Michael Craig and the nursing staff for their kind, compassionate care. The services of Dr. Vik Poonai, a local physician, were also appreciated. Barney had a world of friends. He was forever grateful for their kindness and consideration, including his coffee buddies from the Dingle Exxon. " . . . I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
