He was born in Bratz, Austria a place I have been unable to locate. LDS webpage says it was Brez, Tirol Austria. At 30, he marries Marie in Langres, France just a few miles North of Dijon. Their wedding certificate spells his last name Walcher. She is from Haute Rhin which is part of Alsace Loraine. Her native tongue was likely German like his but they must have spoken French as well. Henry was born to them 7 months after they married so this could have been a forced union. Nine years later they emigrate to St Louis.
At 41 years of age, he joins the Union army as a private. His unit is a reserve unit and the length of enlistment is only 3 months. In the early years of the war, I understand that 3 months was a common enlistment time. He was honorably discharged although he was awol for over a month and was arrested for failing to muster. He enlisted as Jakob Walzer which brings into question if he was really the same person.
In the 1870 census, he is listed as 50, working as a painter and born in Austria. His real estate was worth $2,500 and personal property $100. He is living at 522 S. Jefferson where he died. With him are Mary 47 a housekeeper and Henry 17 Apprentice painter both born in France. In the 1880 St Louis City Directory his address is 1320 Russell? In 1888, a map of St Louis at the main library places that address in a residentail area before the City Hospital was built. Gravois deadends into Russell at what appears to be the 1400 block of Russell.
Funeral services were held at St. Lukes and burial at St. Pauls. He was 82 years 4 months old when he died. In December, 1922 his and Marie's body and two infants (from Reverend Henry H. Walser) were moved from St Pauls to St. Lucas cemetery to a 12 grave plot purchased by Reverend Henry Walser tombstone reads he was a member of Company K. I. Reg. U.S. R. C. Mo.
Buried nearby is Clara Klerner a friend of Wilhelmina Louise Walser.
1890 MO Veterans Census Index-he is listed as with: Supervisors District 4, Enumerators District 46, Douglas County, Locale-Finley.
He was the executor to Frederick Wehmueller's will. Frederick died 6/11/1875 and the probate was recorded 7/26/1875. The will provided for William, brother and Elizabeth his wife. Signed by two witnesses.
In the 1920 Federal Census, Herman says Isidor's mother tongue was German.
